While many of us were finishing up our last minute Christmas shopping, adevastating tornado racked the San Anton animal shelter in southern Spain.Very early in the morning on December 24th, a tornado struck the shelter, severely damaging the structure, and taking out both the electricity and thewater supply. In addition, surveillance cameras that were recentlyinstalled to help curb the theft of the shelter’s galgos were destroyed. Miraculously, all of the dogs survived the ordeal, but as Saskia Rinia VanNauta, the shelter’s chairperson notes, “The dogs are cold, wet and there isno water.”
Located in Villamartin in the Andalucia region of Spain about an hour southof Sevilla, Recogido San Anton helps thousands of dogs of all breeds eachyear. The shelter can hold up to 200 dogs at a time, and volunteers worktirelessly with a number of foundations in Europe to help with the basicneeds of the galgos and other breeds, ultimately helping them find theirforever homes.
The shelter had already been experiencing hardships as adoptions have beendown due to the worldwide economic situation, and this has made theirstruggle profoundly more difficult. It’s not clear at the moment whatequipment can be salvaged and what will need to be replaced. Please, if youare able to make a donation of any size, do — its impact would be enormousright now!
Pictures of the damage to Recogido San Anton can be seen on GRIN’s website (http://www.galgorescue.org/). Donations to the shelter can be made from the GRINsite, as well on the GRIN Cause page on Facebook (www.causes.com/grin). From the GRIN site either PayPal or checks can be accepted.
Thank you so much for your support!
