While you read this page, you will be listening to my Galgo song. I believe they are words that are sung in hope, from every person who has taken in a rescued Galgo and given them the 2nd chance of life. They are powerful words for me, and when I listen to the song, I feel strength to get up and keep fighting. May you hear the same words I hear, and feel welcome to join us in the fight to protect the Spanish Galgos.
It is so very true, a rescued dog chooses the owner, and not the other way around. The plight of the Galgos found me and since that day, I have not stopped writing about their pained lives. Their inner strength to please while being inflicted pain onto, their strength to survive while being starved, is amazing. They are without doubt the most sincere breed of dog, loyal to the end.
The Galgo has a troubled life here in Spain. From as young as 3 months, they are out "training" - they have been bred from a poor tired Mom, who has probably been over bred from on many occasion. From one litter - one baby will become a hunters dog! Where do the rest go?
Theft of the Galgos is high, they are stolen and mistreated. Hunters want a galgo to hunt, but they are not willing to care for him in any way at all.
So they are kept in hovels, holes in the ground, caves, derelict houses, and usually chained to the walls or ceiling. Chained to a life of sheer misery and hunger. Something for the hunter to take his frustrations out on, somone who cannot say anything, just wince at the beatings. On completion of hunting - Galgos are abandoned - some 50,000 or more. Many burnt alive - hung from trees as they call this "playing the piano" hours of torture - dumped in wells or left in derelict houses to starve to death, some a leathel injection of bleach.
What makes a person behave in such a barbaric way? Feeling good about the pain they are inflicting, laughing while they hang their galgo watching the confusion in his eyes, being rid of vermin "no good for nothing Galgo. "
Spain has to be made to have a law against hunting with Galgos, as this will only continue otherwise. I ask you, why it does not have a law already, why is there such a lack of respect for animal life in this country? I don't know the answers - but I know there has to be a law which everyone is working towards in order to make this stop. For me, I will never stop writing, I will look for publications and to get the word out as much as I can, and I will never tire. I only have to look in my baby Galgos eyes, and know I owe it to as many as possible to keep trying. Looking for help along the way from other caring people.
